What The State Asks of You


Texas Concealed Handgun Qualification

Non-Resident License

  • The Department shall issue a license to a legal resident of another state if;
    •     the applicant's state of residence does not provide for the issuance of a license to carry a concealed handgun; and
    • the applicant meets the eligibility requirements of the Act, other than the residency requirement.

Resident License

  • Be a resident of the state not less than six months preceding the date of application, relocated to this state with intent to establish residency in the state, or must be eligible for a non-resident license as provided by the Act;
  • Be at least 21 years of age;
    • 18 years of age as of September 1, 2005 if the applicant is active duty military, National Guard and Reserve included
  • Is not designated by a law of this state as a felony
  • Not be charged with the commission of a Class A or Class B misdemeanor
  • Not be a fugitive from justice
  • Not be chemically dependant
  • Not incapable of exercising sound judgment with respect to proper use and storage of a firearm
  • Must be fully qualified under state and federal law to purchase a firearm
  • Must not been finally determined to be delinquent on child support payments, taxes and comptroller payments
  • In the past five years from the date of application, not have a felony, class A or B misdemeanor conviction
  • Be fully qualified under applicable federal and state law to purchase a firearm.

What Must Be Accomplish

  • Complete a minimum of 10 hours in a classroom instructional environment.
  • Complete a 50 question written test obtaining a minimum of  70% passing score.
  • Score a minimum of 70% / 225 point accuracy rate of 50 rounds fired at a target silhouette.
  • Have an acceptable background investigation as conducted by the State of Texas and the FBI.  
  • Qualify with a Personal Firearm 32 caliber or larger.
  •     Semiautomatic  (SA)
  •             Qualify to carry both type firearm (recommended)
  •     Revolver  (NSA)
  •             Qualify to carry revolver only
